Ranchero Brothers at Stubb's
Austin, Texas - April 12, 2000

This is what I wrote in my journal after the show. It has been slightly edited. I was 19 years old.

... Murry and Rhett walked up to the stage and proceeded to sit down, which they said they knew was different than what we usually saw. Rhett then told Murry that "you know I was in a bad mood when I made the set list? Well I'm in a good mood now." Murry: "Drugs will do that ..." Rhett got a crushed look on his face and said "Don't even joke about that ..." Murry then started telling some story and Rhett leaned into the microphone as if to speak and either stopped short or let out an odd groan. A girl up front must have said something like "say excuse me" because Rhett proceeded to tell us that he had NOT burped and was mortified at the accusation. He also got defensive and said "I have been doing this for 14 years - that was not a burp" and then thought about what he'd said. Rhett proceeded to get more drunk from then on into the show. At one point, Murry was introducing a song of his, talking about being in love, running the race, getting almost to the finish line then having someone come out and shoot you. Rhett meanwhile had picked up his notebook and was cuddling the little cute kittens in the photograph on the cover and then turned to Murry and said - "What, I wasn't listening ... did you get shot?" So Murry laughed and kept talking and Rhett piped up and said "I'm sorry you got shot, man". Later Murry spent a while with Rhett introducing the unreleased singles they did with Waylon Jennings and about how the whole thing was a fake, never really happened. Murry then proceeded to start the song but Rhett stopped him and said "I'm sorry, I really don't know what song we're playing". Murry told him "The Iron Road" and [Rhett] said "hum a few notes of it", so Murry softly played. Rhett seemed to remember and they proceeded. Then a girl maybe asked for "Valium Waltz". Rhett was intrigued and said that they hadn't put it on the setlist but because he did a shitty job on Murry's song, Murry could feel free to play shitty on Rhett's unrehearsed song. When they started to play "Curtain Calls", Murry told us it was a song that often got neglected at Old 97's shows. Rhett was about to start singing it, then asked Murry "How does it start?". So Murry told him "In a Western town, beneath the northern lights ..." Oh yeah. See, it does get neglected. Rhett played "Southern Girl" and talked about how it was actually set on the West Coast. Murry sang "W. Tx Teardrops" and "Crash on the Barrelhead". Rhett made a big deal about putting two Old 97's songs on the setlist and he did 'em back to back, that's it, but they ended up playing more. They did a very passionate version of "If My Heart Was A Car" near the end of the night, with Rhett changing lyrics and tempos. They played a Killbilly song and talked about playing at Serrano's (a Mexican restaurant up Red River) years ago. For one of Murry's songs, Rhett wanted to introduce it and told us that it was totally awesome or something silly like that. Rhett couldn't stay still on his swivel bar stool and almost fell off it backwards at one point. Towards the end, they played "Singular Girl", saying that they'd made a promise to the other band members to not play anything off the upcoming album [Satellite Rides], but they were gonna break that because a pretty girl asked them to. Murry added "That's how they usually get broken".
Some point before this, a nicely drunk [Rhett] was being harassed by the same girl who'd claimed he burped. Murry threatened her by telling her they'd send her home to go do homework and later said they'd get her a cigarette (probably to shut her up). Rhett added in a voice of wonderment, "If you talk to her, she'll talk back!" I think that finally got her to shut up. She was playing with Rhett's notebook at one point. Assorted lines [from the songs] ... one about driving a girl home and if she won't do it with me her sister will ... If you die fearing God and something else, you won't go to heaven, you'll go to Champagne, Illinois ... "I Won't Be Home No More" and being born in a Mustang on a cold night in a hard rain and the first song the on the radio was I won't be home no more. [Alex's note: the lyrics are how I remembered them the next day -- I know the real ones now.] The played "The One" for the other band members. Not played: no "Valentine", "Bird in a Cage", "Designs on You", "Timebomb" (a first for me - Rhett has always played this one). They did play: "Daybed", "In the Satellite Rides a Star" (Murry talked about how his dad went to Rev Co. and bought "Revolver" and "Magical Mystery Tour" for $3.99 and he's been working on this song ever since then). I think Rhett started with "No Longer in Love" - the happiest song we know (because he was in a good mood). Murry sang "Up the Devil's Pay" and maybe said it was a borderline song (one of his was) about going on the new album, so they were gonna get a flavor for it. He might have asked for the wind sound effect on this one too. Oh, I think the song of his that involved the race track shooting was "The Wedding Place". Rhett sang "Visiting Hours" I think.
All in all, it was a wonderful evening. I had a good view from the top of my little steps [I was parked on those concrete steps on the right side of the Stubb's indoor stage]. The "encore" consisted of them walking off stage, reaching the pool table then turning right back around. "That didn't take us long" said Murry.

Other incidents: Rhett accused Murry of just being a prop comic like Carrot Top as Murry played with his glasses. He took 'em off and flipped 'em upside down. Yup, they looked the same. Later, Murry called Rhett "six eyes" when he donned Murry's glasses as part of the joke after he whined about Murry calling him "Four Eyes" ("but I'm wearing my contacts!!!!"). Also Murry was tuning his guitar or something (not playing music) and Rhett looked annoyed and said "remind me to get you a real guitar sometime ..." Murry smiled, looked up, and said "Oh I sure will ... see, Rhett won't remember this tomorrow and I can just see it now, we're driving back and (Murry leans into the mike) "Dude, you owe me a guitar" (said with ZERO accent). And Rhett just kinda looked up in his drunk confusion and shrugged, agreeing.
