Nada Surf
Bimbo's 365 Club, San Francisco, CA
October 21, 2005

This was a new club for them and for me. They had a great lighting rig but sadly, didn't aim one at Ira's face waaay back on his drum riser. So I mostly focused on Daniel and Matthew, because they were both closer and better lit. Again, this is me not using any flash and going for a more emotional response. I'm also working on a technique of just holding my camera above my head, more at eyelevel with the performers and capturing whatever may be happening, without looking through the eyepiece. This is how I got some of the more colorwashed shots below. Because after working so much this past week, month, year, everything, I was ready to just smile and dance and enjoy the hell out of whatever nada surf had to offer this time around. And it was plenty, including the "meow meow lullaby" song, a great rebuttal of adding a very rock and roll "FUCK YEAH" into "fruit fly" after some dude yelled that out during the quiet intro, and generally doing a stunning job of playing across all of their albums. As always, thank you so much, guys. Enjoy the photos.

Matthew Caws asks the lighting guy to bring down the whites. "We like it dark. Not because we're goth or anything."

Daniel Lorca on bass and vocals. Everyone sings.

Ira Elliot on drums and vocals. With his two gigantic convex supermarket mirrors above his drumkit. Crazy!

Matthew and his absolutely beautiful sounding Les Paul.

Do not fuck with the European. Or his cigarettes.

After opening with "Blizzard of '77", the show starts to get more crazy. And by crazy I mean rock.

Daniel brings it around on "Hi-Speed Soul".

I have no idea what Matthew was saying at this point.

Ira breaks it down.

Matthew, alone for "Your Legs Grow"

Daniel during "Blankest Year".

"I had the blankest year -- I saw life turn into a TV show ..."

Daniel watches as Matthew does something like ...

Again, I have no idea.

During "Inside of Love".

Daniel and the double microphone mounted low at the center of the stage.

"I look in the mirror to see what my hair is doing ... Is it kinda Skywalker or is it kinda stupid? But that's not the real reason I'm looking ..."

Sweaty at the end of the night. But at least the club gave them fluffy towels.

Ira smiles and walks off between encores.

Daniel during the last encore.

Ira watches Matthew for timing.

At the end of the night, Ira congratulates Matthew. Or something.
